Master the Art of Koi-Koi

Koi-Koi is the beloved two-player game played with Hanafuda cards—Japan's traditional 48-card "flower card" deck. Each round, you match cards by month to capture pairs and build scoring combinations called yaku. When you form a yaku, you face a crucial choice: bank your points or call "Koi-Koi" to keep playing for more.

That risk-and-reward decision is the heart of Koi-Koi. Stop and you secure your score; call Koi-Koi and you might double or triple it—or lose everything if your opponent finishes first. Playing Koi-Koi online lets you sharpen that instinct against players worldwide or practice against the AI anytime.

Whether you're new to Hanafuda or a seasoned Koi-Koi player, our free Koi-Koi online game offers ranked matches, private rooms, and no download. Master the art of Koi-Koi online here.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play Koi-Koi online for free?

Yes, Hanafuda Legends offers a completely free Koi-Koi online experience directly in your browser with no download or account required.

Is Koi-Koi the same as Hanafuda?

Koi-Koi is the most popular game played with a Hanafuda (flower card) deck. While Hanafuda refers to the cards themselves, Koi-Koi is the specific 2-player competitive game variant.

How do you score points in Koi-Koi?

How to Play Hanafuda Koi-Koi Online

Koi-Koi is a traditional Japanese card game played with Hanafuda (flower cards). Two players match cards by month, capture sets called yaku, and choose to bank points or call "Koi-Koi" for higher scores.

Game setup

Each player receives 8 cards. Eight cards are placed face-up in the center (the field). The remaining 24 cards form the draw deck. Players alternate turns.

Turn flow

Play a card from your hand: if it matches a card on the field (same month), capture both; otherwise add it to the field. Then draw a card and match or add it. If you form a yaku (scoring combination), you can stop to keep points or call Koi-Koi to continue for more. New to Koi-Koi? Try our interactive tutorial.

Yaku (scoring combinations)

Yaku include Five Brights, Moon Viewing, Poetry Ribbons, Ino-shika-cho (Boar-Deer-Butterfly), and many more. Each has a point value; the game shows them as you play. See the complete rules and all 12 yaku.
