Keeping Hanafuda Legends going
Hanafuda Legends is the biggest online Koi-Koi game there is — around 6,700 players a month, 11 languages, and more than half of them in Japan.
It's made by me, in Slovenia, mostly at night after work. A designer helps with the art. A few people help with Japanese and music. That's the whole operation.
Seven months of evenings and weekends: 15 decks, 130 achievements, a ranked ladder, an interactive tutorial, an Android app, and an iOS one in review.
The game is free and it stays free
No round limits. No paywalls. Ranked, vs CPU, private rooms and the tutorial all stay free. Every deck that's free today stays free, and anything you'll be able to buy with coins will also be earnable by playing.
Money never gives you an advantage in a match. It never will.
What's coming
- iOSwith Apple now, out in October. Offline play included.
- Season 1ranked play becomes seasonal from October, with a real hanafuda deck as the prize for the top player, and a second deck drawn at random from everyone who played 20 or more ranked matches.
- Hana-awase and Hachi-Hachitwo more traditional hanafuda games beyond Koi-Koi.
- Coins and cosmeticsearned by playing. Card backs, table designs, frames.
- A journey across Japana single-player mode where you travel prefecture to prefecture, collecting the regional deck of each place. The one I most want to build.
Why I'm asking
For seven months, the servers and the design work have come out of my own pocket every month, and the game earns nothing. That's been fine so far. It's getting harder.
I'll build all of the above either way. Support just means I get to do it properly, instead of squeezing it into whatever time is left.
What supporters get
A frame shown next to your name in the game — on the leaderboards, in matches, and on your profile. Once you have it, it's yours permanently, even if you stop supporting later.

If you support, it genuinely helps. If you just play, that's plenty.
