What is Koi-Koi?

Koi-Koi is a two-player Japanese card game played with a 48-card Hanafuda deck. You match cards by month to capture pairs, form scoring combinations called yaku, and then choose to stop and bank your points or call "Koi-Koi" to keep playing for more. The player with the higher score at the end of the round wins.

At its heart, this is a game of high-stakes decisions.

Stop: End the round immediately to bank your current points safely.

Call "Koi-Koi!": Continue the game to try and score higher. If your opponent finishes a set first, they steal the win and double their score!

About the Developer

My journey with Hanafuda began two years ago while reading the book Around the World in Eighty Games. I was immediately captivated by the history—from its popularity among Japanese soldiers in older times to the fact that Nintendo originally started as a Hanafuda manufacturer!

After playing countless versions online, I decided to build Hanafuda Legends to reflect my vision of what a premier digital Koi-Koi experience should look and feel like. This project is a labor of love, and I hope it brings you as much joy to play as it brought me to build.
